Quiénes somosAbout us
SCI4life Venezuela nació en 2024 para impulsar el conocimiento científico sobre la lesión medular (LM) mediante la innovación, la educación y la difusión de las prácticas actuales. Muchas personas con LM en Venezuela enfrentan barreras importantes para acceder a información de salud actualizada y a apoyo. Queremos cerrar esa brecha.
SCI4life Venezuela was founded in 2024 to advance scientific knowledge about spinal cord injury (SCI) through innovation, education and the dissemination of current practices. Many people with SCI in Venezuela face significant barriers to up-to-date health information and support. We want to close that gap.

To improve the quality of life of the spinal cord injury community in Venezuela by bringing leading-edge knowledge and tools in SCI care and research to patients, families and health professionals.

We share evidence-based resources in Spanish, including fact sheets from the US Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC).
Formamos a estudiantes de medicina y profesionales de la salud en el manejo actual de la lesión medular y su rehabilitación.
We train medical students and health professionals in current spinal cord injury management and rehabilitation.
Promovemos proyectos que generen conocimiento local y acerquen a Venezuela los avances en neurorrehabilitación y neuromodulación.
We promote projects that generate local knowledge and bring advances in neurorehabilitation and neuromodulation to Venezuela.

Estudiamos a 73 adultos con lesión medular. La resiliencia, es decir, la capacidad de adaptarse ante la adversidad, influyó en cómo las personas viven su función intestinal incluso más que la gravedad de los síntomas.
We studied 73 adults with spinal cord injury. Resilience, the ability to adapt in the face of adversity, shaped how people experienced their bowel function even more than symptom severity did.

Preguntamos a 52 personas con lesión medular, operadas principalmente con ampliación de vejiga, si se arrepentían de su decisión años después. La mayoría tuvo muy poco arrepentimiento. La necesidad de hacer lavados de vejiga fue el factor más asociado al arrepentimiento.
We asked 52 people with spinal cord injury, most of whom had bladder augmentation, whether they regretted the decision years later. Most had very little regret. Needing bladder irrigation was the factor most linked to regret.

What it means for you: if you are considering bladder surgery, ask your doctor what daily care you will need afterwards, such as irrigation.

Usamos resonancia magnética funcional para observar qué ocurre en el cerebro cuando la vejiga se contrae de forma voluntaria y cuando lo hace de forma involuntaria.
We used functional MRI to see what happens in the brain when the bladder contracts voluntarily and when it contracts involuntarily.
Por qué importa: entender cómo el cerebro controla la vejiga ayuda a desarrollar mejores tratamientos para la incontinencia de origen neurológico.
Why it matters: understanding how the brain controls the bladder helps develop better treatments for neurological incontinence.
